A mono-black devotion deck in Magic: the Gathering would benefit greatly from including Gray Merchant of Asphodel, as it can drain a significant amount of life from opponents and gain you life in return based on your devotion to black. While there may be other powerful black cards to consider, Gray Merchant's ability to swing the game in your favor by draining life and gaining you life makes it a strong contender for inclusion in a mono-black strategy, especially in formats like Commander where its effect can have a big impact.
