Illusionary Presence could be beneficial in a control deck that focuses on disrupting the opponent's board by making it difficult for them to block. However, there are better options available such as Phantasmal Image or Phantasmal Dragon which offer more versatile abilities or stronger stats for a similar cost. Illusionary Presence may not see much play in competitive Magic: the Gathering decks due to its limited utility compared to other available options.

Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it’s not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can’t be made. For example, if a permanent with “cumulative upkeep ” has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay or sacrifice the permanent.
