2023 is a busy year for Hasbro. Not only there's announced MTG releases for nearly every month, but some of these releases are going to bring different settings to Magic:The Gathering's fictional universe. To add even more novelty to its business ventures, Hasbro has just announced another partnership, this time with Mattel, the legendary toy-maker of titles such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, and UNO, besides many others. Some of the franchises by the two companies are the global top-selling products in their categories, namely Per Circana, Barbie, Hot-Wheels, UNO and Monopoly.

The announcement initially states the two toy-makers will be mixing up some of their biggest titles. To start, a Barbie-branded Monopoly game will be released by Hasbro in Fall 2023, then a Transformers-branded UNO game will be produced and distributed by Mattel sometime late this year. Finally, a Transformers-branded Hot Wheels product is supposedly coming early 2024.
““We are excited to pair some of the most popular brands together for the first time. This collaboration features world-class IP, celebrates the timeless appeal of these brands, and creates unique play opportunities for fans,””
- Nick Karamanos, Senio VP Entertainment Partnerships at Mattel
The first product mentioned, the "Barbie-branded Monopoly game" will come right after the theatrical releases from both of these companies, Mattel's "Barbie (2023)" movie, and Hasbro's "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" movie, are released in the Summer of 2023. From then on, the partnership will stack release after release until at least 2024, though a limit of time to their partnership hasn't been mentioned.
Since no word was said regarding these products being the only ones to come from this allegiance, Magic: The Gathering fans could be seeing sets which bring any of the Mattel franchises into the world of the card game. There's a faint possibility this isn't the last we see out of this partnership, particularly because MTG's Universes Beyond has been a moderate success among fans ever since its launch in 2020.
This year alone will bring two beloved franchises into Magic: The Gathering, such as the Lord of the Rings set, to come Summer 2023, and the Doctor Who set, which are set to follow the success of the 40,000 Warhammer set in 2022. In 2024, Assassin's Creed and Final Fantasy have been teased to join the MTG collabs.
Though this collab might seem to be coming to halt some of the toy-makers losses considering the decrease in toy purchases in late 2022 and early 2023 and the upcoming rumored recession in the U.S., it is undeniably possible that these two toy giants might extend their partnerships and create something unique for Magic: The Gathering as well. But only time will tell.
