Malfunctioning Holodeck fits white-based artifact-synergy, blink/ETB-value, and midrange or prison-style Commander decks that want flexible removal while protecting a key permanent; blinking it lets you exchange its current exile target for a new one, though the old card returns when it leaves. At three mana, its Ward {2} makes it generally stronger than `Oblivion Ring` or `Banishing Light` for removing an opposing nonland permanent, since opponents must pay extra to remove it and recover their card, although those enchantments can also target your own permanents for niche blink/protection lines. More efficient options exist when their restrictions fit: `Portable Hole` is cheaper for low-cost targets, `Skyclave Apparition` leaves a replacement token but is a creature with blink synergies, and direct answers such as `Get Lost` or `Generous Gift` permanently remove threats at the cost of giving the opponent something back.
