The Gitrog Monster Commander Deck

This Commander deck centers on The Gitrog Monster, a powerful Golgari land-engine commander that rewards sacrificing lands. It lets you play an additional land each turn, requires a land sacrifice during your upkeep, and draws a card whenever a land is put into your graveyard from anywhere. The deck uses those abilities to turn lands into mana, cards, graveyard resources, and eventually a combo finish.

The primary strategy is to establish The Gitrog Monster, accelerate with mana creatures and fast mana such as Sol Ring, Dark Ritual, Elvish Mystic, Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, and Lotus Cobra, then repeatedly put lands into the graveyard. Fetch lands such as Verdant Catacombs, sacrifice effects like Harrow, Crop Rotation, and Crystal Vein, plus the commander’s upkeep cost, all become card draw while Gitrog is in play.

Life from the Loam, Ramunap Excavator, and Crucible of Worlds recycle sacrificed lands, ensuring the deck does not run out of resources. Exploration and Azusa, Lost but Seeking make the commander’s extra land-drop ability even stronger, allowing explosive turns where lands are replayed from the graveyard and converted into more mana or cards. Splendid Reclamation can create a major swing by returning a graveyard full of lands directly to the battlefield.

The key combo is Gitrog Monster + Dakmor Salvage + a discard outlet, usually Oblivion Crown, Noose Constrictor, or Putrid Imp. With Gitrog on the battlefield, discard Dakmor Salvage and use dredge to replace the resulting draw. Dredging Salvage mills cards, and each milled land triggers Gitrog to draw again. By carefully using the discard outlet and dredge, the deck can repeatedly cycle through its library, place its lands in the graveyard, and generate a very large hand. Golgari Grave-Troll also supports this graveyard-focused plan with a substantial dredge number.

The deck’s strengths are its exceptional card advantage, resilience to ordinary removal, and ability to turn apparently negative costs into value. Sacrificing lands is rarely a real drawback when those lands replace themselves in hand and can later be replayed. Zuran Orb can protect life totals while triggering Gitrog, while Sylvan Safekeeper protects the commander by turning spare lands into temporary shroud. The list also has flexible answers in Assassin’s Trophy and Beast Within, which can handle almost any problematic permanent.

Its main weakness is dependence on The Gitrog Monster. Without the commander, many sacrifice and graveyard effects are far less productive. At five mana, Gitrog can also be vulnerable to being removed before generating value. Graveyard hate, especially effects that exile the graveyard or prevent cards from entering it, can shut down Life from the Loam, Crucible-style recursion, dredge, and the Dakmor Salvage combo. The deck may also be exposed to fast aggressive opponents if it spends its early turns setting up rather than interacting.

Overall, this is a synergistic graveyard-combo Commander deck that plays a strong value game before threatening a powerful Dakmor Salvage loop. It is at its best when it can convert lands into a renewable resource, protect The Gitrog Monster, and use its graveyard as an extension of both its hand and mana base.
