Gruul Ruby Storm in Modern

Gruul Ruby Storm is a spell-based combo deck built around Ruby Medallion, which reduces the cost of most red spells and allows the deck to generate mana faster than it spends it. The deck uses Manamorphose, Pyretic Ritual, and Desperate Ritual to produce additional mana while continuing to cast spells. Card-draw effects such as Wrenn's Resolve, Reckless Impulse, and Valakut Awakening help maintain momentum and find more rituals or payoff cards.

The main objective is to cast a large number of spells in one turn, increasing the storm count before finishing with Grapeshot. Past in Flames provides a powerful second chance by giving the graveyard's instants and sorceries flashback, allowing rituals, card-draw spells, and Manamorphose to be reused. Galvanic Relay can exile cards for later access after a storm turn, while Empty the Warrens offers an alternative victory by creating a large Goblin army. Ral, Monsoon Mage can support the combo by copying spells or generating additional value as the turn develops.

The green splash provides flexible interaction. Nature's Claim answers artifacts and enchantments, while Boseiju, Who Endures offers similar utility from the manabase. Silence can protect a critical combo turn by preventing the opponent from casting spells, and Prismatic Ending provides broader removal. Wish gives access to sideboard or outside-the-game answers, potentially finding a finisher, protection spell, or removal card when needed.

The deck's biggest strengths are its explosive mana generation, strong card velocity, and ability to win from a relatively small number of cards. Ruby Medallion makes rituals and red cantrips especially efficient, while Past in Flames lets the deck recover from disruption or convert a stocked graveyard into a second combo attempt. The deck can also win through Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens, making it less dependent on a single payoff.

Its weaknesses are vulnerability to early interaction and permanent-based hate. Countermagic, graveyard hate, discard, and effects that prevent spell copying or casting from the graveyard can severely reduce the deck's ability to combo. Drawing too many lands, expensive payoff cards, or interaction without enough mana acceleration can produce slow hands. Ruby Medallion is also important but does not generate mana by itself, so hands without acceleration or sufficient card draw may struggle. The multicolor manabase provides useful splash colors but can cost life and occasionally create awkward draws.

Overall, Gruul Ruby Storm rewards careful sequencing and precise resource management. It is capable of very fast and spectacular wins, but it requires accurate storm-count planning, thoughtful use of Past in Flames, and good timing when playing through opposing disruption.
