The Story of Teferi - Pre-Mending

Core Set 2021 is coming and as you may already know it will be focused on Teferi. I will tell you the lore of this Planeswalker so you can understand all the references that will come in this set.

This article belongs to the series The history of the planeswalker Teferi:

1. The Story of Teferi - Pre-Mending

2. The Story of Teferi - From Mending to New Phyrexia

Teferi was born in Jamuraa, in the kingdom of Zhalfir. Because of his talent he was invited to study at the Tolarian Academy, where he met Karn, Barrin and Jhoira. During the time travel experiments of his mentor Urza, a time accident exploded the academy and Teferi got stuck in a slow time bubble, which made him age more slowly. [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] found Teferi 20 years later and freed him from the bubble of time and a few days had passed for him. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/brb-battle-royale-box-set/disruptive-student-21-med.webp?7350) Teferi remained in the academy and contributed to Urza's experiments, helping to create the legacy, working on the Mana Rig, energizing the artifacts and teaching refugees from the Kingdom of Serra that was destroyed by the Phyrexians. The magician was closer to Jhoira, for whom he felt something other than friendship, but he never carried those feelings forward. After many years working together, Teferi decided to return to his homeland that was suffering from political conflicts and in Zalfhir he became the royal magician and guardian of Jamuraa, the largest kingdom in Dominaria. As a real magician he became friends with [[Jolrael, Empress of Beasts]], who is a Spellshaper, a magician capable of mastering a single magic but with excellent mastery. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/c14-commander-2014/teferi-temporal-archmage-19-med.webp?1028) At some undisclosed moment, Teferi lit his Planeswalker spark, thereby feeling a strong desire to explore the multiverse's planes. To travel, he created 5 guilds to protect the kingdom in his absence and maintain order, the Civic Guild aligned with white, the Shapers Guild aligned with blue, the Shadow Guild aligned with black, the Armors Guild aligned with red and the Farmers Guild aligned with green. So, he left on his journey to learn more about the multiverse. When he returned, Teferi found the continent on the brink of war. The south of Zhalfir separated and formed the theocracy of Femeref, as the churches did not agree with the fact that Teferi left in the hands of the Shadow Guilds the control of the dead. To resolve the country's conflicts, Teferi chose a child with royal blood and then he crowned her as queen of the kingdom, so that the guilds would now serve a single symbol. It brought peace to the nation, but failed to unify it. Tired of the small discussions of his people, Teferi went out with a group of trusted advisers, sages, artisans and sorcerers. They sailed to the Chaza Islands, where Teferi wanted to manipulate time to facilitate the summoning of creatures. The experiments were successful for a while, allowing Teferi to summon powerful creatures that would be useful in future battles. The magician realized that his experiment was extremely unstable, but haven't given that the importance it deserved... until the damage was done. The wizard's experiences damaged the time balance and he tried to correct the timeline by triggering an explosion of mana to fix the hole in time. The unleashed mana burned all the plants, creatures and buildings on the island, then the island just disappeared! The wave of energy caused by the experiment attracted three powerful wizards. The first was [[Mangara of Corondor]], a wise man who was well versed in politics and was attracted by curiosity. The second was Teferi's old friend, Jolrael, she knew the wizard was in that place and went to see what happened to the friend. The last was Urborg's [[Kaervek the Merciless]], who wondered if he could use the power for his own gain. After realizing that there was nothing on the island, the three moved to the region to monitor the place. Mangara became involved in local politics and with his brilliant diplomacy, resolved the struggles between countries and achieved an important position. Driven by jealousy, Kaervek manipulated Jolrael to join him and fight Mangara. The two managed to arrest Mangara in an amber prison and declared war on the nations that supported him. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/ima-iconic-masters/teferi-mage-of-zhalfir-75-med.webp?5499) Years later, the Island of Teferi returned. Soon, Jolrael sent her dragons to the site. Teferi fought the creatures and realized that something was terribly wrong. The planeswalker did some research and found that they were absent from time for many years and that their attempt to fix the timeline indirectly caused a major war on the continent. Unable to interfere directly in the war due to his need to monitor and reconstruct the flow of time, Teferi helped the unified kingdoms by teaching methods to improve his spells. However, for the rest of the war he remained on the sidelines of the conflict. Still, he felt great guilt since it was because of him that the war started. After convincing his friend Jolrael that she was on the wrong side, she went to the side of the defenders of the kingdoms and without the support of the powerful green mage, Kaervek was finally defeated. After the end of the war, Teferi remained secluded in the Chaza Islands and gave up on manipulating over time. Shortly before the Phyrexian Invasion, Keld's kingdom attacked Jamuraa in search of the Hero's Blood, it was necessary to revive the Keldonian champions in Keld Necropolis, because with this force they could defend themselves against the invasion. The attack on Jamurra was led by the supervisor [[Latulla, Keldon Overseer]], a talented and proud warrior, she is also a Spellshaper. Lattulla and her soldiers were defeated by Jamuraa's alliance with the Keld War Council, who did not agree to interfere in the Keld Necropolis, where the honorable Keldonians rested. Teferi stayed out of the war until the very last moment, when he defeated the remaining Keldoninaos. That battle made Teferi realize that he didn't want to be part of Urza's plans to fight Phyrexia and started looking for an alternative, to avoid war. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/uploads/1591325815.jpeg) When the invasion began, a portal opened in Zhalfir's sky, Teferi convinced Urza to join him and use his powers to absorb the energy from the portals until they were destroyed. Teferi told his ex-mentor that he had a plan and would use the portal's energy for something else, but when Urza found out what that plan was, he didn't agree with Teferi and tried to stop his pupil. It was too late. Teferi began his last act in the war. Using the large amount of energy taken from the Phyrexian portals, he phased out (sent to a place outside space and time) part of the continent of Jamuraa. It was this magic that he learned from all his experiments, sometime later the continent reappeared close to the continent of Shiv, where he found Jhoira and his companions and once again began to use his phase-out magic to save them from the brutal attacks of the Phyrexians. Urza went over to Teferi furiously and said that he didn't know what he was messing with, ordering him to stop. Teferi realized that it would kill many of his colleagues, but it was too late, Zalfhir and part of Shiv, disappeared from the Dominaria map. The Story of Kamahl - Odyssey

South of the continent of Otaria, The Cabal controlled several cities, the most important of which was the city of Cabal. Its main activity is to organize fights between gladiators to entertain the population and raise funds to seize power across the continent. Its members invoke monstrosities to fight and, in this arena, there are no rules, what matters is to win. Kabbalah is led by a mysterious [[Cabal Patriarch]]. Opposing The Cabal we have a military organization called the Order. Led by [[Pianna, Nomad Captain]], it controls the north of the continent, and the battle between The Cabal and The Order has been fought for years. Trying to bring peace and law to Otaria, members of the Order are forced to fight in the coliseum in order to gain recognition from the population, while defending their other territories. Other important region of the continent was the Mer Empire, an underwater empire that extends throughout the continent and is governed by [[Aboshan, Cephalid Emperor]]. The undersea empire is inhabited by Cephalids as well as excellent wizards, these creatures are great merchants, as the empire possessed great wealth of treasures and crafts, giving them considerable influence among the cultures of the surface. We also have the Krosa forest, which has seen a worrying increase in the wildness of its animals, the creatures have been threatened by both The Cabal and The Order that hunt the creatures and revolt the inhabitants of the forest. And the last important region in our history is the brown mountains where dwarves, fire creatures, goblins and proud barbarians live, and it is in these mountains that Kamahl's story begins. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/dds-duel-decks:-mind-vs-might-kamahl-pit-fighter-39.jpg?8865) Not much is known about [[Kamahl, Pit Fighter]] 's childhood, except that his grandfather was a legend among barbarians and that he had a fire elemental as a pet. The creature burned his hair, which never grew again. He went to the city of Cabal to gain wealth and fame through fighting in the [[Cabal Pit]]. His fighting technique was a mixture of barbaric hand-to-hand combat skills and red magic that he combined with his huge two-handed sword that was rumored to have been created by Urza's artisans. Upon arriving in the city, Kamahl was scorned by the local wealthy because of his poor appearance and barbaric origins, but through an impressive display of his magical skills he managed to get a sponsorship to compete in Cabal's coliseum. During the presentation of the fighters, prizes for winner, gold, weapons, armor and an artifact called [[Mirari]] were also presented. It was the first time that Kamahl saw the Mirari, the promise was that the artifact would fulfill any wish of the winner. From there on, he became obsessed with the sphere. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/c13-commander-2013-mirari-246.jpg?8194) Kamahl easily defeated the first enemies. During the battle he befriended two other fighters: the druid centaur [[Seton, Krosan Protector]], who came to fight for the Krosa forest in order to stop the attacks on the forest that was being devastated and irritating the big animals, and the other was called [[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]], a young man from the cabal who was representing the organization. Kamahl became the audience's favorite and everyone started to bet on the barbarian. However, the battle in the wells was interrupted by a Krosan Dragon's attack. And from then on Kamahl's life would change drastically. A great reward was offered to anyone who killed the dragon. Our hero went over the creature and managed to kill it, the dragon fell on Kamahl who took a while to rise and when he got up he saw that the reward for the dragon's death was given to the Order's representative, the Avian [[Lieutenant Kirtar]]. He could ask for any of the prizes and asked for Mirari. Feeling wronged and full of fury, Kamahl began his journey to claim the artifact for him. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/ody-odyssey-kirtars-desire-27.jpg?3609) Kirtar returned to the city of the Order. The organization believed that all artifacts should be destroyed, as it could cause the destruction of the world, but the Avian did not follow these ideals. He used Mirari's powers to take control of the organization. Kamahl pursued him and infiltrated the Order's fortress, but failed to steal the Mirari before Kirtar used the device to cast a devastating spell that froze much of the fortress, including Captain Pianna and Kirtar himself. Luckily, Kamahl escaped from the spell and continued his search for Mirari, but the artifact was in the hands of another fortress invader, the Cephalid [[Ambassador Laquatus]], who was also obsessed with the item. Kamahl went over to Laquatus, but the merman handed the artifact to one of his servants and asked to take it to the underwater empire while he was going to hold the barbarian there. The ambassador's servants took the artifact to Mer Empire. Kamhal managed to get rid of Laquatus, but failed to reach an empire that was submerged in the sea of Otaria. Days later, he continued to fight at the Cabal's coliseum, but no prize mattered to him, all he wanted was Mirari. Kamahl befriended a trio of young people who were impressed by his fighting skills and asked him to train them and he agreed to train the young people, but to calm his mind. Meanwhile in the Mer Aboshan empire, the cephalid emperor feels Mirari's call and feels a sudden desire to touch the artifact stored in a chamber. Entering the room, he feels the power of the sphere. The artifact shows a landless world, only oceans across the globe, and the emperor tries to make this true, unleashing the power of the sphere. [image](https://static.cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/crop/ody-odyssey-aboshans-desire-59.jpg?6389) Just like Kirtar, he was unable to control Mirari's powers and caused a great disaster, a great tidal wave submerged a third of Otaria. At that time, Ambassador Laquatus was negotiating with a representative of The Cabal. She had no name, just the nickname [[Braids, Cabal Minion]] referring to her hairstyle. Braids and Laquatus joined forces to battle the Emperor. They remove the artifact from the cephalid's tentacles and took it to the Cabal's headquarters. Once again Kamahl was lucky and survived the tragedy, but his students were not so lucky. Kamahl hears Mirari's call again, so he also goes to Cabal's headquarters! To be continued...
