About Evolution Sage

Evolution Sage would be a valuable addition to a landfall-focused deck in Magic: the Gathering, particularly in a strategy that aims to generate multiple land drops per turn. This card synergizes well with other landfall abilities and can quickly build up counters on permanents or players. While there may be more powerful options available, such as Tatyova, Benthic Druid or Lotus Cobra, Evolution Sage can still be a strong inclusion in the right deck and should definitely see play in a landfall-themed strategy for its unique proliferate ability.

If a permanent has +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters on it, they’re removed in pairs as a state-based action so that the permanent has only one of those kinds of counters on it.

You don’t have to choose every permanent or player that has a counter, only the ones you want to add another counter to. Since “any number” includes zero, you don’t have to choose any permanents at all, and you don’t have to choose any players at all.

If a spell or ability puts counters on a player or permanent and then instructs you to proliferate, choosing that player or permanent will give that player or permanent another of those counters.

The War of the Spark set doesn’t include any ways for players to have counters, but some cards in other sets say that a player “gets” a counter of a certain kind. Notably, emblems aren’t counters.
