Introduction

“The shield is a symbol. Find what you believe in, what you stand for, and you’ll have your shield too.”

- Steve Rogers, Captain America

When we think of Marvel heroes, some names are easy to remember, and Captain America is one of them.

This super-soldier was one of the most represented creatures in the Marvel Super Heroeslink outside website set. He was even the commander of the Avengers Assemble precon.

In this article, you'll find two lists with Captain America, Living Legend: the first is an artifact deck packed with vehicles for you to crew, while the second focuses on mill, with several copies of Persistent Petitioners so that you can mill your opponents' decks until nothing is left.

As always, let's start by getting to know the commander!

Commander: Captain America, Living Legend

During World War II, young Steve Rogers became part of "Project Rebirth." The goal behind this project was to develop a super-serum that could produce super-soldiers.

With his indestructible shield, he took up the mantle of Captain America and became a "living legend" in the Marvel universe.

As a card, Captain America, Living Legend is an incredibly generous legendary creature. He is a 3/4, has Vigilance, and makes your creatures untap the first time they become tapped each turn.

It's as if he's helping them get back on their feet after a fight so they can get in the next one.

As an Azorius Magic Symbol wMagic Symbol u commander with a low mana cost, he comes down early and can help you, for example, create extra mana in a turn with mana dorks.

Let's start with that very topic: mana!

Mana and Ramp

You might not be able to play a Seedborn Muse in an Azorius deck, but you can play a few creatures that were eagerly awaiting Captain America so they could untap once per turn.

Who would have thought that Myrs that can create mana would become some of the Captain's most loyal soldiers?

Another great friend is Grand Architect. It may not create mana itself, but it lets you tap your blue creatures for mana, which you can then use to cast artifacts or activate abilities.

It's also a Lord, so it gives them +1/+1.

Other mana sources include some classic mana rocks, as well as Paradise Mantle, which turns any of your creatures into a mana dork.

Land Tax may not get you ahead in mana, but with it, you won't miss any land drops. You'll also be able to clear any lands from the top of your deck so you don't keep drawing them one after another.

Tap to Win: Other Effects

If you think mana is the only thing that you can reuse with Captain America, Living Legend's ability, you're mistaken.

We have other tricks!

Buffs

Who doesn't like a good old-fashioned buff for their creatures?

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has come to help Captain America in the fight. With Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade, this deck essentially includes a second Steel Overseer. It also lets you remove two counters from your artifacts to draw a card.

In both life and death, Mikaeus, the Lunarch versions are very difficult to deal with.

You can tap this Cleric to give it +1/+1 counters or to remove one from it to put one on each other creature you control.

Card Draw

We usually reserve an entire section for card draw, but in this list, these tools interact so well with the commander that we'll only discuss the ones that you need to tap to work.

Before Ms. Bumbleflower ever dreamed of existing, we already had a Rabbit known for its Machiavellian card draw in MTG. In addition to that ability, Kwain, Itinerant Meddler also gives 1 life to players who drew a card through its effect.

Convoke lets you tap your creatures to pay for that spell, so Meeting of Minds is how you'll take advantage of this ability at instant speed.

Commander games have taught me that you can never have too many Loran of the Third Path!

With her, you can remove something (thanks to her ETB ability) and draw more than once if Captain America, Living Legend is on the battlefield.

Crewing and Station

When Edge of Eternities gave us Station, players who like multiple forms of "transport" gained another way to get around.

And we can't forget that the Avengers have fought in space more than once, so Spacecrafts are more than welcome here!

One of the most powerful Vehicles you can play in this deck is also one of your most expensive cards, mana-wise.

Parhelion II is a Vehicle with Flying, First Strike, and Vigilance that creates two 4/4 Angel tokens with Flying and Vigilance tapped and attacking alongside it whenever it attacks. Because of this card, in a single attack, you can potentially deal 13 damage through the air.

Other Effects to Tap and Untap

You can't rely solely on the commander to untap your creatures, and you want to use their effects multiple times to win the game. This includes Crewing several vehicles in the same turn.

The highlight here is Ioreth of the Healing House, which can untap another permanent or even two other legendary creatures.

Final List

Ready to run over your opponents with a fleet of Vehicles and artifact creature tokens? Then here's your list:

Alternative List

A hero needs to be prepared for every kind of battle.

You've seen how Captain America, Living Legend can have fun with Vehicles and artifacts. Now it's time to explore his potential as the commander of a mill deck.

Captain America seems tailor-made to lead an army of Persistent Petitioners to victory!

This list also plays cards from another recent Universes Beyond set: Avatar.

After all, Waterbending gets much better when you can use it more than once.

While our main list is friendlier and casual, this one is more villainous. After all, it will destroy your opponents' main resource (their deck itself) in just a few turns.

Final Thoughts

Captain America, Living Legend shows us that a card's rarity doesn't determine whether or not it's good in Commander.
