Wizards of the Coast announced Friday (11) that Alchemy will be removed from MTG Arena on February 2, 2027, alongside the Standard rotation scheduled for the start of the year and the Prerelease events for Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. The decision brings an end to the format’s five-year run, after it was created in 2021 to provide a home for cards that were not Standard-legal, offer digital-only content and allow for rebalancing.

According to the article by Dave Finseth, the issues that led to Alchemy’s creation no longer carry the same weight. At the time, MTG Arena needed a place for content that did not fit into Standard and was not powerful enough for Historic, while also receiving fewer releases each year. Today, the platform has several non-rotating formats, releases more sets annually and offers a wider range of options for Constructed players, making Alchemy’s role less clear.

Alchemy’s digital-only cards will remain in the game and will continue to be legal in Historic, Timeless, Brawl and Competitive Brawl. Some have become staples in those formats, while others were later printed in physical form in Mystery Booster products. Wizards said it may ban or rebalance those cards in the future as format management requires. Alchemy: Reality Fracture, scheduled for October 13, will be the format’s final release.

A major change will accompany the transition. On September 22, more than 200 rebalanced versions of tabletop Magic cards will be reverted to their original printings in all formats. Because many of those cards will become significantly more powerful after the reversal, Arena’s banned lists will be updated. In Historic, Galvanic Discharge, Guide of Souls, Nadu, Winged Wisdom, Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord and The One Ring will be banned. In Brawl, the only addition is Nadu, Winged Wisdom. Timeless and Competitive Brawl will see no changes.

The removal of Alchemy includes play queues, the ranked ladder, Constructed events, direct challenges and best-of-three versions. Farewell events are planned, including a major preconstructed deck event bringing together every list from the Into the Future series released over the years. Wizards said its goal now is to focus its efforts on new sets and growing formats, such as Brawl.
