About Bilbo's Gambit
Bilbo's Gambit, Instant, designed by Randy Gallegos first released in Jul, 2026 in the set The Hobbit.
Bilbo's Gambit fits white-based control, tempo, and multiplayer Commander decks that can use its Gift mode politically or to stop a pivotal spell and prevent its immediate recast, particularly on an opponent's turn when the global casting restriction is nearly one-sided; it is weakest in proactive creature decks, where returning a spell to hand is usually too temporary. The closest and generally better option is **Reprieve**, which costs the same `1W`, returns a spell to its owner's hand, and draws you a card without giving an opponent a Treasure, though it lacks the turn-long lockout; **Dovin's Veto**, **Mana Tithe**, **Silence**, and other counterspell or prevention effects are better depending on the colors and target types available. It should see some Commander play as a flexible political interaction spell, but likely not broad competitive play, since giving a Treasure is meaningful and Reprieve is much stronger whenever the no-casting clause is not decisive.
