Brush Off, Instant, designed by Genel Jumalon first released in Apr, 2026 in the set Secrets of Strixhaven.
**Brush Off** would fit best in a blue control or tempo deck that wants flexible countermagic and expects to fight over spells on the stack—especially in spell-heavy metagames where opponents play lots of instants and sorceries, since it can function as a cheaper counter in counter wars. However, at a baseline of **2UU**, it is inefficient compared to staples like **Counterspell (UU)**, **Mana Drain**, **Dissolve (1UU with upside)**, **Sinister Sabotage**, or even **Cancel**, and even when discounted it only becomes **1UU**, which is still worse than Counterspell in most formats. In formats where **Disdainful Stroke**, **Negate**, or **Spell Pierce** are viable, those options are often more mana-efficient for specific roles. Because of this, Brush Off would likely only see play in limited formats or very budget environments; in competitive constructed formats, there are simply stronger and cheaper counterspells available.
