Darkness Descends fits best in a black-based control or midrange deck that either wants a budget sweeper effect or actively benefits from -1/-1 counters, such as Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons or Nest of Scarabs decks, where placing counters generates value; it can also synergize with proliferate strategies or creatures that care about counters being placed. However, as a general board wipe it is usually outclassed: Languish (4 mana, -4/-4), Damnation (4 mana, destroy all creatures), Toxic Deluge (scalable and more efficient), and Black Sun’s Zenith (scalable -1/-1 counters that can be much larger and reshuffles) are typically stronger and more flexible options. Because Darkness Descends only gives -2/-2 effectively and doesn’t scale, it often fails to clear larger threats, so outside of dedicated -1/-1 counter synergy decks or very budget builds, it generally should not see competitive play.
