Duskmantle Guildmage is best suited to a Dimir mill, discard, or combo deck—especially one using **Mindcrank**, since activating its first ability creates an infinite loop: one card milled causes 1 life loss, which causes another card to be milled, and so on, usually winning immediately. Its second ability is expensive for only two cards, and as a 2/2 creature it is otherwise underpowered, so in ordinary mill decks cards such as **Hedron Crab**, **Ruin Crab**, **Bruvac the Grandiloquent**, **Fraying Sanity**, or **Maddening Cacophony** are generally better at advancing the strategy; in control decks, stronger creatures and interaction are preferable. It should see play mainly in casual or Commander combo-oriented decks built around **Mindcrank**, where it is a legitimate finisher, but it is usually not worth playing in competitive Constructed decks unless the specific infinite-combo plan is central to the deck.
