This card, Sever Soul, would be beneficial in a mono-black control deck that focuses on removal and gaining life. While it can be effective in certain situations, there are better options available such as Murder or Hero's Downfall, which offer more versatility and efficiency for a similar cost. However, in a specific meta where nonblack creatures are prevalent, Sever Soul could see play as a sideboard option for targeted removal and life gain.
