Soul’s Fire fits best in casual Commander, Gruul stompy, power-matters, or Voltron decks that reliably control a large creature and can exploit abilities such as deathtouch, lifelink, infect, or double strike; however, three mana is expensive for a spell that requires a creature to remain in play, and it is generally too inefficient for competitive Constructed play. Fling is usually better when sacrificing the creature is acceptable because it costs only two mana and deals damage equal to the creature’s power at instant speed, while Chandra’s Ignition is often much stronger in Commander because it deals that damage to every other creature and each opponent. Soul’s Fire can still be worthwhile in slower casual decks—especially if preserving the creature matters or if it has a very high power—but it should not be an automatic inclusion and generally should see play only when the deck specifically supports large creatures or damage-trigger synergies.
