About Vexing Sphinx

Vexing Sphinx, Creature — sphinx, designed by Lars Grant-West first released in July 2006 in the set Coldsnap and was printed exactly in 3 different ways. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of C$ 0.25.

A control or tempo deck focused on card advantage and disruption would benefit from including Vexing Sphinx in their strategy, utilizing its flying ability to apply pressure while also generating card advantage through its cumulative upkeep and death trigger. However, there are better alternatives in the Magic: the Gathering card pool like Mulldrifter, which provides immediate value and card draw without the upkeep cost, making it a more efficient choice that sees more play in competitive decks.

Rules

12/08/2022

Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it’s not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can’t be made. For example, if Vexing Sphinx has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either discard four cards or sacrifice it.
