Izzet Devourer
Izzet Devourer is a fast, artifact-based combo deck built around Phyrexian Devourer. Its main objective is to put Devourer into play cheaply with Tinker or Show and Tell, then exile cards from the top of its library to make it enormous. Before Devourer is sacrificed for having too much power, the deck can use Fling to deal lethal damage directly to the opponent or sacrifice it to Altar of Dementia to mill a large portion of the opponent’s library.
The deck has many forms of fast mana, including Ancient Tomb, City of Traitors, Crystal Vein, Lotus Petal, Gemstone Mine, and Chromatic Sphere. This allows explosive early turns and makes Tinker especially powerful: a cheap artifact such as Urza’s Bauble, Lotus Petal, or Chromatic Sphere can become Phyrexian Devourer, Phyrexian Processor, Crumbling Sanctuary, or another situational artifact.
Intuition improves consistency by finding key combo pieces or setting up graveyard-friendly selections, while Helm of Awakening can accelerate artifact-heavy hands. Defense Grid and Xantid Swarm protect the combo turn against counterspells and instant-speed disruption. Pyroclasm, Rushing River, Hoodwink, and Tranquil Domain provide flexible answers to creatures, troublesome permanents, and enchantment-based hate.
The deck’s greatest strength is its explosiveness. It can win very early, attacks from an unusual angle, and can punish opponents who keep slow or reactive hands. Tinker and Show and Tell give it multiple ways to deploy its central threat, while Fling and Altar of Dementia offer different finishing methods. Its artifact toolbox also gives it some resilience and the ability to pivot into cards such as Ensnaring Bridge, Jester’s Cap, Crumbling Sanctuary, or Phyrexian Processor when a direct combo kill is less practical.
Its weaknesses are inconsistency, vulnerable mana, and reliance on several pieces working together. Devourer needs a payoff and sufficient high-mana-value cards on top of the library, so poor draws can leave the deck with awkward artifacts and colorless lands. The mana base is painful and fragile, especially against land destruction or aggressive decks. Counterspells, discard, artifact removal, graveyard-independent pressure, and instant-speed removal aimed at Devourer in response to Fling can all be problematic. Despite its name, the deck is not purely Izzet: its mana often stretches for cards such as Xantid Swarm and Tranquil Domain, making careful sequencing essential.
