However, there are often better options for gaining life in this format, such as cards like Sphinx's Revelation or Baneslayer Angel, which provide larger or more immediate effects. Convalescence may struggle to find a place in competitive play due to its relatively slow and low-impact ability compared to other available options.

The life total is checked when it triggers and the ability will be put on the stack only if you have 10 life or less. It checks again on resolution and does nothing if you have more life by then.
