About Open Communications
Open Communications, Sorcery, designed by David Robert Hovey first released in August 2026 in the set Star Trek.
Open Communications would most benefit a blue tempo or value deck built around creatures with enters-the-battlefield abilities, such as Merfolk, Ninjas, Spirits, or creatures that generate value when replayed, since “Beam me up” can turn the required bounce into a useful reuse effect; however, by itself it is only a one-mana cantrip, and its graveyard ability costs three mana, requires a creature on the battlefield, and exiles the spell, making it substantially less efficient than cards such as `Consider` (usually the best comparison because it draws, surveils, and is an instant), `Opt`, `Preordain`, `Ponder`, or `Brainstorm` in decks that can shuffle their libraries. It could be a fun role-player in casual Commander or a dedicated blink/ETB deck, especially if it is an instant, but it is unlikely to see competitive constructed play and generally should not replace the more efficient cantrips unless the deck specifically benefits from repeatedly returning its own creatures.
