Transcendence's ability doesn't cause you to lose the game for having 0 or less life. For every 1 damage you take, you gain 2 life, and lose the game if you have 20 or more. Everlasting Torment's ability doesn't allow you to gain life, essentially blocking the opponent from winning through damage.
