About Multiply by Zero

Multiply by Zero, Instant, designed by Florian Herold first released in September 2026 in the set Reality Fracture. It see play in 1 format: Duel Commander. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of NZ$ 0.69.

“Multiply by Zero” would primarily benefit black sacrifice/aristocrats decks, where killing an opposing creature also creates value through death triggers, or decks that can remove +1/+1 counters first; it is also useful against large creatures with no counters, small creatures, tokens, and indestructible creatures, since a creature with 0 toughness is put into its owner’s graveyard rather than destroyed. However, its weakness is that existing +1/+1 counters, static bonuses, or other toughness increases can let the target survive, so in most formats it is worse than reliable two-mana removal such as `Go for the Throat`, `Infernal Grasp`, `Cast Down`, or `Bitter Triumph`, depending on the format and metagame. It might see play in Limited or a sacrifice-focused casual deck if those alternatives are unavailable, but it should generally not see Constructed play because unconditional removal is more dependable.

Rules

The effect of Multiply by Zero overrides any other effect that sets a creature's base power and toughness, as well as any characteristic-defining abilities that set base power and toughness (such as that of Fblthp, Knows the Way, another card in Reality Fracture). However, if any other effects are increasing that creature's toughness, such as a +1/+1 counter or an effect that gave the creature +1/+1 until end of turn, those will still apply, and in that case, the creature will not die due to having 0 toughness.
