Pinecone Strike fits red midrange, control, or tempo decks that want flexible removal and expect artifact-token strategies such as Treasure, Food, Clue, Blood, or Construct tokens; the exile-on-death clause is especially useful against creatures with death triggers, recursion, or indestructible-like protection from regeneration, though it only matters when 3 damage is enough to kill them. `Abrade` is generally better at the same `1R` cost because it deals 3 damage to a creature or destroys any artifact rather than only an artifact token, so Pinecone Strike would usually be a niche metagame choice rather than a staple; it could see play in Limited or a Standard-style environment packed with relevant artifact tokens and recursive small creatures, but otherwise its second mode is too narrow to displace stronger red interaction.
