This Aethersquall Ancient card would be beneficial in a control deck that focuses on stalling the game and maintaining board control. However, there are other cards like Cyclonic Rift that offer a similar effect at a lower cost and with more flexibility, making them potentially better options for competitive play. Energy counters aren’t mana. They don’t go away as steps, phases, and turns end, and effects that add mana “of any type” to your mana pool can’t give you energy counters.
