A deck that focuses on self-mill or graveyard recursion strategies would benefit from including Mortal Combat, as it incentivizes filling your graveyard with creature cards. However, there are more efficient win conditions available in Magic: the Gathering, such as Laboratory Maniac or Thassa's Oracle, which can win the game instantly without the need to wait for an upkeep trigger. Therefore, Mortal Combat may not see play in competitive decks, but could be a fun and flavorful inclusion in casual or thematic decks centered around graveyard interactions.

If you don’t have twenty or more creature cards in your graveyard by the time your upkeep starts, the ability won’t trigger that turn.
