Five Decks with Final Fantasy for Historic

In our last article about Historic, we brought you a few highlights from Final Fantasylink outside website. You can check out our full review herelink outside website.

In today's article, we'll show you five competitive Historic decks with the new set. Let's go!

Mardu Sacrifice

Let's start with one of the best decks in the format, as well as one that got some very interesting backup cards from the new set: Mardu Sacrifice.

This list centers around Sacrifice, but part of it focuses on energy. The main engine is Goblin Bombardment, which goes great with cards like Unlucky Witness, Ajani, Nacatl Pariah, and Claim the Firstborn. Amped Raptor and Guide of Souls are the "energy" part of this deck - they create value with the counters and put more power on the board.

Final Fantasy gave this build Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, which is a pseudo Bombardment. It may also give you an emblem later on that will work as a permanent win condition.

Izzet Vivi

Vivi Ornitier is the right card for any Izzet Tempo list, and that's also true for Izzet Wizards. This card has simply too much potential, so much so that we couldn't ignore it. It also has the right card type to be a part of this list, so we definitely couldn't ignore it.

This Izzet version is more aggressive and uses low-cost threats like Monastery Swiftspear and Soul-Scar Mage with Dreadhorde Arcanist to get as much value as possible from the low-cost spells this deck uses.

The Monstrous Rage / Cori-Steel Cutter kit fits Vivi's abilities perfectly. They make the target creature bigger as you cast your spells, all while you also deal damage to the opponent and set up Vivi's Magic Symbol 0 ability so you can cast even more spells.

Azorius Planisphere

Astrologian's Planisphere was also one of our highlights in our last article, and we simply couldn't stop ourselves from bringing you an Azorius Artifacts version with it. It works similar to Cori-Steel Cutter, as it feeds this list's Affinity. It also puts a body on the board that will grow as you draw cards or cast non-creature spells.

This list's main strategy is creating value with artifacts and taking advantage of Affinity to put in play threats like Thought Monitor and Kappa Cannoneer.

Planisphere's Equip cost is quite fair, and you can also use it to make Cannoneer or Monitor bigger, as they both have some sort of evasion in combat.

Persist Combo

When we saw Resentful Revelation during spoiler season, we couldn't think of any other list to test this card except for Persist Combo. This build centers around Persist and putting huge creatures in the graveyard so you can then bring them to the battlefield earlier.

Jumbo Cactuar is an interesting option for this build, as it can finish the game very easily if you manage to attack with it freely. This deck also plays other threats, like Griselbrand and Atraxa, Grand Unifier.

Resentful Revelation is an upgraded Ransack the Lab. The advantage is you can cast it from the graveyard for its Flashback cost.

One Punch Tifa

I left the best for the end. This is, without a question, one of the most fun and exciting lists with the new cards.

This strategy centers around Tifa Lockhart and her ability, which doubles her power whenever a land enters your battlefield. This way, if Tifa is on your board and you play a fetch land like Sheltering Landscape, you'll be able to double her power twice. With this in mind, when you use a Scale Up on her before you play a fetch land, you'll make her a 24/4. This build can end the game on turn 3, but it needs other support tools.

Wild Shape is another way to take advantage of Tifa's ability. It makes her a creature that has 3/3 base toughness and power, and also gives her trample as a bonus. You can also use this card to protect Tifa by picking its first mode, or to block a flying creature by picking its second mode.

Sazh's Chocobo is also very interesting in this build. It is an initial threat that also interacts with fetch lands but on a smaller scale, which can give you some space to play Tifa. Dreadhorde Arcanist is another great addition to this list. With it, you can replay the Tifa combo later on if you have to, and Deathrite Shaman can use your graveyard really well. Cori-Steel Cutter is a special card in this list because it is also a threat that benefits from the spells in it and can easily end the game if Tifa can't.

Final Words

Final Fantasy has a lot of potential even in a format like Historic, particularly in Best of Ones. All lists above have a lot of potential too, and we highly recommend them as starting points for this format.
