IntroductionThe last set of the year is finally out. Reality Fracture closes the current story arc and brings Jace Beleren's story to an end after 2 decades as one of the main characters in the multiverse. This set is also a collection of references to iconic characters, moments, and cards from the game, redesigned through Jace's "ideal" world. It includes versions in different colors and a "what if" angle that some fans have been waiting for since War of the Spark ended. It is also one of the most fascinating sets in 2026 for Pioneer. Several cards in it are extremely powerful on their own, some mechanics are already being explored in the competitive scene, and the set brings back past staples such as Chandra, Torch of Defiance and Tarmogoyf, along with reworked versions of Snapcaster Mage, Dark Confidant, and Seasoned Pyromancer.Below, let's review the most important cards in this set for Pioneer.WhiteBoth Angels and Lifegain variants in Pioneer can use the new Enlightened Confidant to create card advantage in the slot Collected Company usually occupies. I don't believe Selesnya Company has room for a card that doesn't have an ETB ability and only creates value under certain conditions.I don't like a 4-mana "do nothing" card in Pioneer, but if Flickering Hound stays on the battlefield in a list with many ETBs and creatures, it can easily bury the opponent in card advantage. We've already seen Greasefang, Okiba Boss versions use Can't Stay Away, and Generous Revival is close enough to act as copies 5 through 8 of that card.Speaking of lifegain, Germinate Recruits can create a token army, which, in turn, can trigger multiple abilities when they enter the battlefield, provided we set things up properly. It is not the kind of card Angels wants, but it could inspire new archetypes.Mono White Tokens/Mono White Control uses both Elspeth, Storm Slayer and The Wandering Emperor, as well as several other cards that create tokens. It may be worth a try. We've seen Ouroboroid and Collected Company decks lean more into the +1/+1 counter subtheme. Guiding Hydra is a decent addition, but a terrible hit for Company. It's hard to imagine a pseudo-Giver of Runes with Soul Warden not finding a place in Pioneer, but it seems to me a bit too win more in most decks I can see it in (apart from maybe a Mardu Discard variant).A Superfriends deck has never seen much play in Pioneer, and Reality Fracture gives us plenty of support to try one. Maybe Loyal Tutor can become a staple if we find the right home for it.I'm torn between considering Lyra, Archangel of Dawn a staple for Selesnya Angels and a win-more card when we already have Righteous Valkyrie. Either way, it deserves a shot.BlueThis could become a staple. In a traditional Control list, most of the cards will be noncreatures, but this new Chandra allows you to cast sweepers or Teferi, Hero of Dominaria earlier, create card advantage, and control the board.Geist of Saint Thalia is an efficient tempo play for Spirits if this list takes a more traditional "Flash" approach, with counterspells and cheap removal that costs colorless mana. Its true potential, however, seems to lie in combining it with Emry, Lurker of the Loch and cheap artifacts. We've seen a few Cauldron and Looting decks in Leagues and Challenges. Lyra, Tolarian Archangel is an excellent addition to any list that draws a lot of cards, and it also has a useful activated ability that is easy to enable with Agatha's Soul Cauldron and Vivi Ornitier. The best way to view Samut, Tyrant of Naktamun is as a pseudo-Voice of Victory that also works on the opponent's turn. It could become a sideboard staple, may deserve a slot in the Wishboard of decks such as Lotus Field, and it would be extremely dangerous if new, consistent 2-card combos become a thing in the future.Izzet Cauldron and Looting have gained another efficient tool: Seasoned Cryomancer, a blue version of a Modern staple. This card is on par with, or perhaps even slightly above, Pioneer's usual power level. So, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw it in other archetypes and if it eventually becomes a staple. The new (and probably last) Jace was one "each player" away from being absurd in Pioneer and Standard. As it is, however, it is quite solid, and we should explore it as a consistent source of card advantage that protects itself and rewards players for keeping their board stable.BlackSacrifice decks are the obvious place for Darklight Phoenix. Golgari and Jund versions have flexible slots and a self-mill theme that this card can fit into. Because it considers any two creatures, it enables small interactions, such as dealing 2 damage to an enemy creature with Mayhem Devil while setting up the Cat-Oven interaction, or even using a Deadly Dispute and then a Fatal Push to trigger it.The biggest problem I see in Sacrifice lists is that Darklight is not the best way to draw cards, particularly in versions with Ygra, Eater of All, which prefer ways to progress and/or dig for the combo. Rakdos, however, can play cards such as Insolent Neonate, Masked Meower, and even Bloodtithe Harvester to get the most out of this new creature.A Stitcher's Supplier with Threshold and transforming into a pseudo-Delver of Secrets deserves an honorable mention.Pioneer has many answers for Extrapolate the Impossible to become a reliable black "Wishboard" option. Some combos, such as Transmogrify, set up secondary effects like Indomitable Creativity, which can turn this new card into a Demonic Tutor that gives you both your win condition and the answer you need to deal with unfavorable game states.Multiply by Zero deals with Indestructible creatures but can't answer threats with +1/+1 counters. It's another addition to the long list of different black removals in the game.RedIf a Superfriends deck becomes a thing, Ajani Unrelenting will be an excellent support card. However, given the cheap tutors available and the fact that the most absurd thing we can do with Entrust the Spark is find a Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, I believe going "wide" with Ajani is not the most effective option.Considering the Blood tokens from Voldaren Epicure and Bloodtithe Harvester or the Clues from Thraben Inspector and Novice Inspector, I would try Draconic Visitor as a win condition in a list that takes advantage of these cards alongside other synergies, such as Ensoul Artifact and/or Gleeful Demolition.Snapcaster Mage is second on my Pioneer wish list, right behind Death's Shadow, but we can settle for the red version, which swapped Flash for Haste. It still lets you cast cheap spells from the graveyard but isn't as versatile. I've played enough Bloodthirsty Adversary in the past to believe Stingcaster has potential if we find the right list. I just don't think Rakdos Midrange, as it is now, is that list.GreenAdding this much green devotion and punishing blocks by finding Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and any other land make Hexhaven Invigorator an option for Green Devotion. Even though it's clearly vulnerable to removals and bounces.Green Ensoul Artifact was not on my list of possibilities, but situations like this are exactly why a set can benefit from a broad range of alternative effects. Puppet Crafting also hits non-aura enchantments, including the Overlord cycle. It may have some hidden potential, and I like the idea of having Stubborn Denial and Blossoming Defense to protect a threat.Pioneer is defined by Fatal Push, red removals, and no fetch lands. A turn-1 Thoughtseize will usually mean a 2/3 Tarmogoyf on the following turn, which means most of the red removals in the format today can deal with it. Furthermore, right now raw power alone no longer makes a good card. A card needs to do more than simply "be a big creature," and Goyf doesn't create value straight away. That does not mean this former Modern staple won't find a home in Pioneer, but the current format rewards "snowballing" more than cheap beaters. Badgermole Cub is a better 2-drop in Golgari Midrange. Goyf doesn't go well with Greasefang, Okiba Boss because it does not interact with the main strategy and is vulnerable to the same hate cards, while Ramp/Devotion lists prefer other options.MulticolorAll of Fatehold Charm's modes are solid in Spirits and Flash lists, and it is never dead in your hand. It is worth a try.The same applies to Theorix Charm, but I believe it could struggle more to find a place in an established archetype and will probably need a list with Abhorrent Oculus and similar effects to reach its full potential.Pioneer has harsher answers to Spellslinger/Prowess decks, especially those that limit how many spells are cast in a turn. Solarium Sentry, however, is cheap, has a decent body, and significantly slows down Aggro decks if it is not answered. It has potential.Stealing an enemy Greasefang, Okiba Boss, tapping other creatures to Crew your Parhelion II and winning the game is bound to happen at some point with Vindictive Triumph. Other than that, a way to exile something with no strings attached has a place in Orzhov Midrange lists with Ketramose, the New Dawn.Legendary cards have become more common as a theme each year because of the many Universes Beyond releases over the past two years, to the point that we will probably end 2026 with more new legendary creatures than nonlegendary ones. Solitary Cell is another effect that should make up for the poor draws that lists that play too many legendaries often give you, and it deserves a shot because it represents both looting and removal in the right deck. The most absurd thing we can do with Entrust the Spark is sacrifice any Planeswalker to find Ugin, the Spirit Dragon as early as turns 3 or 4. The problem is that this only works if you get a perfect hand with a random bad card in the middle. The best way to use this new spell is to treat it as a Bring to Light in a Planeswalker list.ColorlessEmrakul, the Exigent Doom will only be viable if we can cast it quickly and make its cast trigger as efficient as possible. Besides Nykthos Ramp, Big Mana lists rely too heavily on mana dorks and Cub to execute their game plans. If you get this card from a Fight Rigging, it is worse than Emrakul, the Promised End, which is also less effective than Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. This could be a sideboard staple. A Torpor Orb that also shuts down artifacts is an excellent answer, particularly as WotC has increasingly been adding ETBs to this card type.Perilous Vault saw some play in the past, and The Echoverse Fulcrum is cheaper and gives you a some way to filter your hand and sweep the board. Because it does not enter the battlefield tapped, we can activate it on the same turn. The problem is that no deck in Pioneer nowadays wants this kind of effect and/or lacks more effective options that do not involve making its sweeper vulnerable to Abrade and Abrupt Decay.LandsRoiling Canopy is the closest Pioneer has come to Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. Like its predecessor, we can combine it with Scapeshift to find several Forests and trigger them all at once. Unlike Valakut, we need a creature to target with the triggers and make sure they deal damage to the opponent and that the creature is not destroyed in combat. That is a lot of steps for a combo.ConclusionWhat do you think? Tell us your thoughts in our comment section below.Thank you for reading, and see you next time!
