Cantankerous Captain best fits a creature-dense red or red-based aggro deck, especially one that goes wide enough to reliably reach eight total power by turn three or four and wants to force damage through with a key attacker; it is stronger in Limited and casual/Commander combat decks than in tuned Constructed, where a single +1/+0 and conditional menace each turn is usually modest for three mana. In a wide aggro strategy, `Goblin War Drums` is generally better at the same mana cost because it gives every creature menace permanently, while `Archetype of Aggression` can be better for creature-heavy Commander lists by granting menace to your whole team and preventing opponents' creatures from having it. The Captain is playable when its body is acceptable for its cost and you need repeatable combat pressure, but it is unlikely to be a high-priority competitive inclusion unless the available card pool lacks stronger three-mana threats or mass-evasion effects.
