However, there are better options like Vampire Nighthawk that offer flying and lifelink in addition to deathtouch, providing more versatility and survivability. While Thrill-Kill Assassin may not be the top choice, it could still see play in a budget or theme deck where its Unleash ability can be leveraged effectively.

You make the choice to have the creature with unleash enter the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter or not as it’s entering the battlefield. At that point, it’s too late for a player to respond to the creature spell by trying to counter it, for example.
