Drijfzand kan nuttig zijn in een controledek dat tot doel heeft agressieve strategieën te vertragen door aanvallende wezens te verzwakken. Er zijn echter betere opties zoals Maze of Ith of Mutavault die veelzijdigere of krachtigere effecten bieden. Drijfzand wordt mogelijk niet veel gespeeld in competitieve kaartspellen vanwege de beperkte impact in vergelijking met andere landkaarten die beschikbaar zijn in Magic: the Gathering.
