The Premodern format of Magic: The Gathering has undergone a major change to its banned card list with the removal of Parallax Tide, as announced last Sunday (18). The measure is effective immediately for both tabletop and online events, with implementation planned for Magic Online starting January 20, 2026.
The decision to ban the card was motivated by the disproportionate impact it has had on the Metagame. Originally conceived to temporarily exile lands, Parallax Tide has been exploited in ways that allow for the removal of large quantities of lands from the game almost irreversibly. This dynamic, according to the statement, has the potential to "virtually end the game at that point," creating frustrating situations for the opponent and significantly altering the pace of matches.

The card gained major prominence in several competitive Premodern archetypes—especially in control strategies and variants of Tide Control, Replenish, and Stiflenought—and came to occupy a considerable share of performances in the most important events of 2025. In many cases, the predominance of decks with Parallax Tide limited the space for building alternative decks and ultimately restricted the diversity of viable strategies in the format.
The announcement also details the mechanisms that made the card problematic in practice. Although the exile effect is designed to last only temporarily, skilled players took advantage of interactions with cards like Chain of Vapor and Stifle to circumvent the return clause itself. By manipulating the resolution order of abilities, these players managed to keep lands exiled almost permanently, seriously compromising the opponent's responsiveness and shortening matches before the opponent could recover.
According to the format curator, who manages the ban list to maintain balance and diversity, Parallax Tide decks have developed a "gravitational pull" on deckbuilding: many players ended up incorporating it regardless of their original strategic plan, simply to avoid a competitive disadvantage. This resulted in an environment where playing control without Tide became increasingly powerful and restrictive.
This is the first banlist update on the format since July 2023, when Land Tax was banned. The Premodern does not have a fixed policy for ban list updates; however, the changes announced this Monday reflect an ongoing assessment of competitive balance and the health of the Metagame.
