Sebbene fornisca una rimozione efficace per le minacce a bassa resistenza, esistono opzioni potenzialmente migliori come Fatal Push o Lightning Bolt che offrono maggiore versatilità o un costo di mana inferiore. Strangling Soot potrebbe essere utilizzato in metagame specifici in cui la sua capacità di esiliarsi con flashback fornisce un valore aggiunto, ma nel complesso la sua inclusione dipenderebbe dalle esigenze specifiche del mazzo e dal meta attuale.
