Een controledeck dat zich richt op het verstoren van de strategie van de tegenstander zou er baat bij hebben Sudden Setback in hun deck op te nemen. Hoewel Sudden Setback effectief kan zijn bij het tijdelijk uitstellen van de belangrijkste spreuk van een tegenstander of permanent, zijn er betere opties beschikbaar, zoals Counterspell of Unsubstantiate, die veelzijdigere en permanente oplossingen bieden voor het omgaan met bedreigingen. Sudden Setback zou situationeel spel kunnen opleveren in specifieke metagames waar het effect ervan bijzonder nuttig is, maar het is misschien geen basiskaart in de meeste competitieve decks.
