Een kaartspel dat zich richt op verstoring, controle of bescherming van belangrijke wezens in gevechten zou baat hebben bij het opnemen van Trap Runner in Magic: the Gathering. Hoewel de mogelijkheid om een niet-geblokkeerde aanvaller te dwingen geblokkeerd te worden, situationeel nuttig kan zijn, zijn er over het algemeen betere opties beschikbaar in dit soort kaartspellen, zoals verwijderingsspreuken, tegenspreuken of beschermingsspreuken die veelzijdigere en impactvollere effecten bieden. Trap Runner kan gespeeld worden in meer niche- of casual decks waar zijn vaardigheden goed samenwerken met andere kaarten, maar het kan moeilijk zijn om een plaats te vinden in meer competitieve of geoptimaliseerde strategieën.
