About Retaliator Griffin

Retaliator Griffin, Creature — griffin, designed by Jesper Ejsing first released in May, 2020 in the set Magic Online Promos and was printed exactly in 3 different ways. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of 3.59.

A deck focused on defensive strategies and attrition would benefit from including Retaliator Griffin, as it can quickly grow in power when your opponent deals damage to you. However, there are better cards for similar effects, such as Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, which not only provides a similar ability but also has additional powerful effects. While Retaliator Griffin can be a fun and flavorful addition to a deck, more competitive options may be preferred in high-level play.

If an ability causes damage to be dealt, that ability will always identify the source of the damage. The ability itself is never the source. However, the source of the ability is often the source of the damage. For example, Deathbringer Thoctar’s ability says “Deathbringer Thoctar deals 1 damage to any target.”

If Retaliator Griffin is dealt lethal damage at the same time that you’re dealt damage by a source an opponent controls, Retaliator Griffin will be put into a graveyard before it would receive any counters. Its ability will still trigger, but it will do nothing when it resolves.
