About Shields Up!
Shields Up!, Instant, designed by Raymond Swanland first released in Aug, 2026 in the set Star Trek.
Shields Up! fits best in white-based Commander decks that depend on protecting a key artifact or creature, especially Voltron commanders, artifact-combo decks, or counter-synergy creature decks, since it both stops targeted interaction and prevents most destruction while adding a +1/+1 counter to creatures. It is a solid budget protection spell, but it is often outclassed by cheaper or broader options: `Blacksmith's Skill` costs one white mana and protects an artifact or creature with hexproof and indestructible, `Loran's Escape` does the same while adding scry 1, and `Flawless Maneuver` can protect your entire creature board for free when you control your commander. For a creature-centric deck, `Tamiyo's Safekeeping` is also excellent because it costs one mana, grants hexproof and indestructible, and gains 2 life, though it requires green.
