A deck focused on ramping and controlling the board with Gates would benefit from including Sage of the Maze, as it provides mana acceleration and a potential win condition with animated lands. However, there are better options like Nissa, Who Shakes the World or Nissa, Vital Force which offer more consistent and powerful effects for a similar mana cost, making Sage of the Maze less likely to see play in competitive decks.
