The day has finally arrived: Persistent Petitioners is a card that players have been trying to use since its release in Ravnica Allegiance, but it lacked enough support to be a viable strategy in Pauper.
Over the years, the deck has received more Advisor cards with good effects, making it easier to create a strategy that, while relying on Petitioners to function, can dig deeper into the deck for them using the ETB effects of other creatures, building a new combo in the format!
The Decklist
Maindeck
The entire archetype revolves around the interaction of Persistent Petitioners with Advisor creatures to mill all the cards in the opponent's deck. While using multiple copies seems tempting, twelve is an ideal number to ensure at least one of them is available frequently, allowing you to use the remaining Advisors for other interactions.
In total, we run twenty creatures of this type that have some distinct effect.
Glistener Seer is an good one-drop that grants Scry 1 for three turns, while its 0/3 body is excellent for blocking in the early game.
Forecasting Fortune Teller, Pond Prophet, and Bellowing Crier have the same function: draw more cards and find more Advisors or Winding Way to keep resources flowing. They are all also great blockers.
Masked Vandal is an excellent maindeck hate card against Affinity and also works well with archetypes that run many enchantments, such as Bogles, where removing an Armadillo Cloak or Ethereal Armor can make a big difference during the game.
Winding Way offers, for a low cost, up to four cards in the controller's hand, commonly finding three while putting a land or Gnaw to the Bone into the graveyard.
Gnaw to the Bone is our main tool to hold off the opponent. We have more Petitioners and Advisors than they have removals, so just securing a few "extra turns" with life is enough to win the game at some point.
Generous Ent functions as an "extra land" in the deck and makes it easier to find Forests or secure land drops with Winding Way, as well as searching for Rimewood Falls.
Radiant Fountain offers extra life gain against Aggro and can be reused with Simic Growth Chamber, allowing us to play with only 16 lands as it makes it easier to secure the necessary land drops.
Sideboard
Hydroblast is the main answer against Red Aggro in blue and a necessary tool to hold off Burn spells, while Moment’s Peace is better against Mono Red Rally and other go-wide strategies.
Tamiyo’s Safekeeping can function as extra life gain, but its main purpose is to protect our creatures against cheap spot removals, complemented by Dispel to deal with Counterspells.
If you expect more Blue Tempo variants in your Metagame, you can use a full set of Dispel instead.
Gut Shot deals with important X/1 creatures like Spellstutter Sprite and Priest of Titania, helping to contain archetypes that can control the pacing of the game.
Relic of Progenitus is our main tool against graveyard-based decks, especially Spy Combo and Dredge, although it also delays Tolarian Terror variants for e few turns after we mill the first cards.
