Magic: The Gathering Online (MTGO) will receive the Premodern format within the experimental environment known as Contraption. This was confirmed by the platform's own development team.

Premodern brings together cards released before Eighth Edition, in a format that revives classic sets from 1995 to 2003. Created by Martin Berlin in the early 2010s, the format maintains a fixed list of expansions and does not receive new releases, operating with a stable set of cards and rules along with its own banlist.

The debut of Premodern will be gradual. In Contraption, players will have access to different league modes:

  • Friendly League, aimed at entry-level matches;
  • Two regular leagues, intended for a more competitive audience.
  • Holiday League, between December 17th and January 2nd, followed by a regular league until January 20th.

    According to the team, the inclusion of Premodern meets the demand of players seeking a competitive environment with classic cards. The team is also evaluating holding Trials and Challenges-type events, depending on community engagement.

    Depending on the adoption rate, the format may continue on MTGO after the testing period. The decision will be made closer to the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed and might lead to Premodern having its own room in late February.
