A deck that benefits from casting multiple spells in a turn, such as a spell-heavy control deck or a deck focused on spell synergy, would find Volcanic Torrent to be a powerful addition. However, in a competitive setting, there are potentially better options like Cyclonic Rift for a similar mana cost that offers more flexibility and versatility. Volcanic Torrent could see play in specific strategies that aim to capitalize on casting multiple spells in a turn to deal significant damage to the opponent's board.

A spell’s converted mana cost is determined only by its mana cost. Ignore any alternative costs, additional costs, cost increases, or cost reductions. For example, Bloodbraid Elf’s converted mana cost is always 4.

The converted mana cost of a modal double-faced card in exile is that of its front face. If the last card you exile is a modal double-faced card, you may only cast the back face if the resulting spell would also have a lesser converted mana cost than the spell with cascade.

When the cascade ability resolves, you must exile cards. The only optional part of the ability is whether or not you cast the last card exiled.

The value of X is calculated as Volcanic Torrent resolves. It will include Volcanic Torrent, spells you cast in response to Volcanic Torrent, and spells you cast prior to casting Volcanic Torrent, even if those spells haven’t resolved yet. For example, say the first spell you cast in a turn has cascade and that cascade ability causes you to cast Volcanic Torrent. Then Volcanic Torrent’s cascade ability causes you to cast another spell. When Volcanic Torrent resolves, X will be 3.
