The Magic: The Gathering collaboration with Avatar: The Last Airbender will not feature pre-constructed Commander decks. The decision was detailed by Wizards of the Coast designer Max McCall in an interview with The Gamer.

McCall explained that the main challenge was the series' narrative focus. Avatar centers on characters and their individual journeys, and they would either gain or lose colors during the story. According to him, trying to transform each nation or character into a complete deck would not properly reflect the spirit of the game and could result in artificial products. Therefore, the team chose not to release preconstructed decks:

“Avatar is cool because it's about all of these characters working together for various purposes in service of the greater story, but also these characters are having their own emotional and spirtual journeys across their own story arcs, too. Typically character growth relates back to Magic's colour pie. Really ambitious people are black, like Zuko at the start of the story. But as characters change, and they start to think, 'Actually what's important to me is following my own heart; 'I want to do things that matter the most to me'; ' I want to find ways to work with other people and live together in harmony', then these characters become more red or green. If you take a Commander deck and Aang is the commander, Aang has his own set of colours. At various points in the story, Aang is all of the colors. Which could would you pick for him? You're kind of automatically not doing the character the proper amount of justice. Moreover, what characters make sense in an Aang deck, and what are their colors? We basically couldn't find a way to make Commander decks that felt satisfying in terms of who was the headline character, what other characters were in the deck and did any of it make sense together.”

McCall also explained the reason for the absence of red in some of the cards representing the Fire Nation, mentioning that red in the game is commonly associated with passion, freedom, and creativity, while the Nation's ambition is closer to the black color, while the need for an oppressive order is closer to the white color in the card game's philosophy.

Universes Beyond: Avatar The Last Airbender is part of Magic: The Gathering's series of collaborations with other pop culture brands, bringing the world of Avatar to the card game, along with its iconic characters and moments. The set will be the last mainline release of 2025 and is scheduled for November 21st.
