“The perfect symbiosis.”

- Kwia Vigorbloom

When we look at the Hexhaven schools featured in the Reality Fracturelink outside website set, the idea of an “Invasive School of Healing” certainly stands out.

Witherbloom’s counterpart was founded by Kwia Vigorbloom, a powerful Selesnya Magic Symbol gMagic Symbol w creature that creates Lotus tokens.

In this article, you’ll find a complete decklist for playing this commander, along with some combo suggestions to close out the game. Let’s start by getting to know the sphinx!

Commander: Kwia Vigorbloom

“Bring me those who underperform. I will make them thrive.”

- Kwia Vigorbloom

When she founded Vigorbloom, Kwia established three oaths for the school:

I will serve a purpose greater than myself;

I will grow, heal, and strengthen the community;

I will ensure the community’s survival through healing by any means necessary.

What better way to represent these values than with a creature that has flying, vigilance, lifelink, ward 2, and still creates a Lotus to add three mana of any color?

As a Selesnya commander, Kwia has access to white lifegain support and all the cards released for Vigorbloom, making for a deck that initially seems peaceful but hides a rather oppressive side.

Lifegain

Lifegain is important for triggering the commander’s ability, but the decklist also contains other cards that interact with it.

Our classic Wardens, such as Essence Warden, Soul's Attendant, Soul Warden, and the alternate version of our favorite necromancer, Liliana the Faultless, will passively increase your life total as other creatures enter the battlefield.

With The Wind Crystal in play, we’ll reduce the cost of white spells, double the amount of life gained, and can activate its effect to give creatures flying and lifelink until end of turn.

In this deck, reaching -10 to obtain Ajani Resolute’s emblem won’t be an impossible task, since he gains loyalty counters whenever you gain life.

Known for being a key piece in several combos, Aetherflux Reservoir isn’t here for any specific combo, but rather as a way to turn excess life into a lethal weapon against your opponents.

Even without spending 50 life, the card is still valuable, since it helps you gain life as you cast spells during the turn.

Protection

Kwia is a commander that draws attention, for better or worse. As a result, a few protection pieces are essential to staying in the game.

We’ll use Jennifer Walters and Grand Abolisher to prevent interference during our turn, stopping opponents from casting spells and using certain abilities.

In addition to these pieces, we have targeted protection to save our permanents from board wipes or removal, such as Heroic Intervention, Clever Concealment, Flare of Fortitude, Flawless Maneuver, Sejiri Shelter, and Teferi's Protection.

Shalai, Voice of Plenty is a popular Selesnya Magic Symbol gMagic Symbol w creature that gives you, your other creatures, and your planeswalkers hexproof.

Combos

Now that we’ve covered the pieces that make the lifegain engine work and those that protect your board—or even your turn—it’s time to look at the combos that will help you secure victory.

Kwia Vigorbloom + Soul Warden + Emiel the Blessed

It’s worth noting that this combo also works with the other Wardens (Essence Warden, Soul's Attendant, Soul Warden, and Liliana the Faultless). Soul Warden is used specifically here simply to illustrate the interaction more clearly.

With all the permanents on the battlefield and at least three mana available:

1. Use the available mana to activate Emiel the Blessed, blinking Kwia Vigorbloom;

2. When Kwia enters, Soul Warden’s ability will trigger, causing you to gain 1 life;

3. Then, Kwia’s ability triggers, creating a Lotus token;

4. Repeat the process, using the Lotus tokens to pay for the blink.

With this combo, you’ll have infinite life to use with Aetherflux Reservoir, for example, infinite creature and artifact ETBs, and, if you have a token doubler such as Mondrak, Glory Dominus, Parallel Lives, or Anointed Procession on the battlefield, infinite mana.

Walking Ballista + Heliod, Sun-Crowned

Loading icon

This is a classic combo in lifegain decks and works with Archangel of Thune or Heliod, Sun-Crowned, but if you use Archangel of Thune, you’ll need another piece that gives Ballista lifelink.

With all the permanents on the battlefield and Walking Ballista with at least two +1/+1 counters:

1. Use Heliod, Sun-Crowned’s ability to give Walking Ballista lifelink until end of turn.

2. Activate Walking Ballista’s second ability, removing a +1/+1 counter to deal 1 damage to any target.

3. Thanks to Walking Ballista’s lifelink, you’ll gain 1 life.

4. Heliod, Sun-Crowned will see you gain life and cause the Ballista to gain more counters.

5. Repeat from step 2.

This interaction results in infinite life, and more importantly for us, infinite damage with the help of Ballista.

It’s a very difficult combo to disrupt and highly effective at doing what we want: ending the game.

Ramp and Mana Generation

To ensure we have enough mana to cast Kwia Vigorbloom as early as possible, we rely on cards such as:

We aren’t using the classic Kodama’s Reach, Rampant Growth, and Cultivate package because the deck was designed around a mana base with many nonbasic lands. However, you can adapt this section to fit what you have available.

Draw

As always, we have to talk about draw—one of the most important elements in any Commander deck!

Straight from outer space, Haliya, Guided by Light joins The Gaffer, who came from the Shire, to provide card draw in the late game.

Meanwhile, Bloombrute and Enlightened Confidant are Hexhaven creatures that accompany Kwia on her adventures at the table.

A card that nearly every player owns is Shamanic Revelation.

Here, it generates a lot of value for us, since it not only draws a card for each creature you control, but also gains you life for each one with power 4 or greater.

Final Decklist

In the end, your decklist will be:

Alternative Decklist

If you prefer more casual decks and aren’t as interested in combos or higher-bracket lists like the main one, you can try a delightful food-themed Kwia deck!

The deck has so many Hobbit and Lord of the Rings cards that it looks like it came straight out of those sets—but don’t be fooled!

Here, Treebeard, Gracious Host, Stew the Coneys, Bag End Banquet, Sam, Loyal Attendant, Peregrin Took, and other cards are meant to create plenty of Food tokens so that you can always make your Lotuses with Kwia.

Final Thoughts

All the hype surrounding Kwia Vigorbloom is justified.

Besides being a powerful 6/6 with flying and several other interesting keywords, the commander is in the ideal colors for gaining plenty of life with ease, while also giving you access to interesting combos that can close out the game.

Lotus tokens are nothing to dismiss, and they let us experiment with powerful spells that see little play because of their high mana costs, such as Ulamog, the Defiler, or spells with X in their costs, such as Heliod's Intervention, Walking Ballista, and Finale of Devastation.

Whether you’re new to Magic or not, Kwia promises to be an easy commander to play with a powerful deck—one that gives opponents minor traumas.
