About First Contact
First Contact, Instant, designed by Kieran Yanner first released in Aug, 2026 in the set Star Trek.
First Contact best fits green self-mill, graveyard-recursion, delirium/threshold, reanimator, or permanent-heavy toolbox decks: it stocks the graveyard while replacing itself with the best permanent among four milled cards, and being an instant lets the deck hold up interaction before casting it. It is particularly strong when the graveyard is a resource, but less appealing in aggressive decks, spell-heavy decks, or decks that cannot afford to mill key nonpermanents. Compared with existing cards, it is broadly better than `Mulch` (same cost and four cards, but it can return any permanent rather than only a land, and is instant) and usually stronger than `Grapple with the Past` (one more card milled and any permanent returned, though Grapple costs only one mana); `Grisly Salvage` can be better in black-green decks needing to find a creature or land from five cards, while `Once Upon a Time` is better when legal and free early, but does not fuel the graveyard.
