About Protection Magic

Protection Magic, Instant, designed by Mikio Masuda first released in May 2025 in the set Final Fantasy Commander and was printed exactly in 2 different ways. It see play in 1 format: Commander. It's currently being selled by the minimum price of C$ 0.27.

Protection Magic can be beneficial in a deck focused on protecting key creatures from damage or destruction, making it useful for aggro or midrange strategies that rely on specific threats. While it is a decent option for those looking for additional defense, there are other cards like Sheltering Light or Gods Willing that offer similar protection while providing additional bonuses like card draw or scrying, making them potentially stronger choices depending on the deck's needs. However, Protection Magic could still see play as a versatile option in a White-based deck looking to protect important creatures from removal spells and combat damage.

Rules

06/06/2025

"Shield" is not an ability that creatures have and shield counters are not keyword counters. If a creature with a shield counter loses its abilities, the shield counter will still protect it as normal.

06/06/2025

A creature with a shield counter on it may still be destroyed by state-based actions if it has damage marked on it equal to its toughness or has been dealt unpreventable damage by a source with deathtouch.

06/06/2025

If a permanent that would be dealt damage has more than one shield counter on it, that damage is prevented and only one shield counter is removed.

06/06/2025

If a permanent with a shield counter is dealt unpreventable damage, that damage will be dealt and a shield counter will still be removed.

06/06/2025

Removing a shield counter when a permanent would be dealt damage or destroyed isn't the same as regenerating that permanent.

06/06/2025

Shield counters don't prevent players from sacrificing creatures.
