Inside Information would be best in a black-based “theft” or high-risk combo deck that can gain large amounts of life, manipulate an opponent’s library, or exploit unusually cheap/high-impact opposing cards; however, in most normal decks it is unreliable because you must spend \(XBB\), hit useful cards from an opponent’s deck at random, cast them only that turn, and then pay life equal to mana value—often an enormous additional cost. It is especially weak against decks whose cards do not fit your mana colors or game plan, since paying life replaces only the mana cost, not color or other casting restrictions. For stealing a specific card, **Praetor’s Grasp** is generally better because it searches an opponent’s library for the exact card you want and exiles it for later use; for raw card access, black decks usually prefer **Necropotence**, **The One Ring**, **Ad Nauseam**, or **Bolas’s Citadel**, depending on the format and strategy.
