Before we move on with our list, let's see exactly what convoke is.

What is Convoke? How Does it Work?

Convoke is a keyword ability released in the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, and, at the time, it was heavily associated with the Selesnya guild.

This keyword lets the player tap creatures instead of using mana to play a spell. Each creature you tap is equivalent to one generic mana, or one mana of the card's own color, when you cast a spell.

For instance:

If you have, on the board, two black 1/1 Vampire tokens, and one white 1/1 Spirit token, you can tap all three of them to pay for this card's cost and cast this creature.

If you had two white 1/1 Spirit tokens and an Edgar, Charmed Groom, you'd still be able to cast it, as Edgar is a Magic Symbol b card and can be used to convoke spells that use white or black mana.

In both cases, you'd be casting Markov Baron for free, without using any mana from lands, mana rocks, or similar. You can also cast this creature as usual with these types of cards if you need to.

Convoke is a static ability. You can also use any creatures with summoning sickness (those you just summoned and don't have Haste) to convoke a spell.

In the March of the Machine set, we got a Jeskai Magic Symbol uMagic Symbol rMagic Symbol w Commander deck that focused entirely on this mechanic. Click here to check out our article on the "Divine Convocation" precon decklink outside website.

As you must have realized, any spell with convoke is potentially a free card. You can take advantage of this mechanic with any deck that focuses on creating creature tokens.

15 Convoke Spells to Cast Cards for Free!

1. Clever Concealment

This is an instant you'll want in your deck. Clever Concealment shines when the matter is protecting your board, as it phases out any number of nonland target permanents you control. In practice, this means that your opponent's Farewell won't do anything to your board, and, at the beginning of your next turn, you'll still have your creatures, artifacts, planeswalkers, and enchantments to use.

2. Chord of Calling

If this mechanic used to be tied to the Selesnya guild, nothing makes more sense than to play a creature tutor, isn't it?

Chord of Calling is an instant that searches in your deck for a creature that costs the same of less than X, and puts it on the battlefield. As it has convoke, you can keep your creatures ready to attack and, as your opponent passes the turn to you, tap them to convoke this spell and possibly get a finisher or another valuable creature to your game plan.

3. Hour of Reckoning

We couldn't forget this card in your list, as it is the best boardwipe for any token deck! Even though it is a bit expensive for a white card, convoke makes Hour of Reckoning extremely easy to cast, and very frustrating for your opponents.

4. City on Fire

What if Fiery Emancipation was easier to cast?

City on Fire's effect is the same as this iconic enchantment, and, even though it costs 2 more mana than Fiery Emancipation, it has convoke, which means it's easier to cast.

Besides this, its effect, which triples the damage you deal, and makes Lightning Bolt incredibly dangerous.

5. Bennie Bracks, zoologist

Bennie Bracks, Zoologist is perfect for any white deck that creates tokens (creature tokens or not). As long as you create a token in a turn, no matter whose turn, Bennie draws you a card in the ending phase.

6. Hoarding Broodlord

How about a 7/6 Dragon with convoke and an ETB effect that tutors you a card and gives cards in your exile convoke as well?

Tapping eight creatures to cast Hoarding Broodlord may seem crazy, but, considering you'll be able to exile the card you tutored face-down (where your opponent will hardly be able to deal with it), and you'll also be able to cast it later on with convoke, this is an incredible card.

If you have a Commander deck with Prosper, Tome-Bound as your commander, it's worth considering using this card in your list.

7. March of the Multitudes

Did you miss a Selesnya spell in this list?

With March of the Multitudes, you'll create many 1/1 Soldier tokens with lifelink. As this is an instant, you can cast it when your opponent is passing the turn to you, and guarantee the creatures you create will be ready to attack.

8. Obelisk of Urd

This is a great artifact in decks that focus on a single creature type, as it gives them all a +2/+2 buff.

9. Lethal scheme

Loading icon

Lethal Scheme is a removal that works against creatures and planeswalkers. The cool thing about this card is in its effect, which states, "Each creature that convoked Lethal Scheme connives".

The connive mechanic states that, when a creature connives, you draw a card, then discard a card. If you discard a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on that creature.

So, besides removing cards, Lethal Scheme draws you cards and gives counters to the creatures that convoked it.

10. Impervious Greatwurm

A certain day, someone from the card design team asked themselves, "what would MTG be like if we had an indestructible 16/16 creature?", and that's how we got Impervious Greatwurm.

Who knew small creatures could convoke something so big?

11. Pile On

This is another removal that destroys a creature or a planeswalker, but this time it also has Surveil 2.

As we all know, with a black deck, it is very valuable to have the option to put the top card in your deck straight in the graveyard.

12. Transcendent Message

Drawing cards with convoke? Yeah, we got it!

Have you imagined filling your hand with the help of your creatures? With Transcendent Message, you'll draw as many cards as you can by tapping your creatures and convoking.

13. Meeting of Minds

If you like simpler effects and cheaper cards, Meeting of Minds is a great convoke draw for your deck.

14. Wildfire Awakener

Loading icon

Wildfire Awakener is definitely a nightmare for your opponents if you use it in a deck with many convoke spells, as the Elementals this card creates deal 1 damage to a target opponent any time they are tapped.

15. Ancient Imperiosaur

This dinosaur is a big creature, but, when you summon it, it gets even bigger.

As if getting two +1/+1 counters for each creature that convoked it wasn't enough, Ancient Imperiosaur also has Trample and Ward 2.

Interesting, don't you think?

Final Words

There are many different types of convoke cards, but most of them, if not all, really improve your deck. For this list, we cut a few specific cards, like Order of Sacred Dusk, and prioritized more generic cards that fit different types of decks without any issue.

This mechanic has a lot of potential when you have a full board, and is really valuable in decks that focus on creature tokens.

That's it for today. See you next time!
