With the title, Manfield becomes a two-time Magic: The Gathering world champion. The player had previously won the World Championship in 2015.

Manfield was the subject of controversy during the final day of the event. In the quarter-final match against Ken Yukuhiro, the player used a Boomerang Basics and paid the card's cost, but opted to reverse the play after realizing it could cost him the game.

On social media, the player and the judges were criticized for allowing this decision, while others explained that paragraph 4.8 of the Magic Tournament Rules allows players to reverse decisions as long as no new information has been revealed.
