Misfortune's Gain can be particularly effective in a control or midrange deck that aims to manage the board while gaining incremental advantages. The ability to destroy a creature while granting the opponent life can be strategically beneficial if your deck can outlast them or if the life gain is not a significant concern. However, there are arguably better options like Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares, which provide creature removal without giving the opponent any life.
