A new Gruul deck variant has appeared in recent Premodern Leagues, leaning into a fair game plan that trades aggressive synergy for more Midrange-oriented lines: cheap sweepers, board interaction, card advantage with Sylvan Library, and powerful finishers like Blastoderm and Ravenous Baloth! The DecklistMaindeckUnlike The Rock, we are not interested in ramping mana in the early turns, only in securing our land drops to sequence the other cards properly. Sylvan Library is essential for this purpose and provides long-term value when needed. Our ideal start almost always involves having it on board by turn two.Our win conditions involve a mix of the added value from Blastoderm and Ravenous Baloth (and both interact with each other to provide extra life), plus the two-for-one from Call of the Herd to increase board pressure. The advantage of our threats is that they naturally dodge Pyroclasm, our way of holding off Aggro. Earthquake adds to the sweeper count to control the board while also turning into a win condition on its own as the game goes long.Lightning Bolt is red's standard interaction. Despite the sweepers, a way to answer a Goblin Lackey or another troublesome creature on turn one is necessary to avoid overly explosive turns.Premodern's Metagame has never been so focused on artifacts and enchantments. Stiflenought, Replenish, and Enchantress rely on specific enchantments or artifacts, while archetypes like Sligh or Mono Black Midrange have been running a respectable number of those permanents, so we have maindeck answers with Naturalize and Hull Breach. Depending on your local Metagame, we could swap Hull Breach for another card and move it to the Sideboard. The manlands Treetop Village and Mishra's Factory complement our win condition, while Wasteland helps deal with the opponent's Sol Lands or manlands. One advantage of an allied-color Midrange deck is the number of dual lands available, which increases color access consistency even with many utility lands in the list.SideboardPyroblast and Red Elemental Blast are essential against Stiflenought, Landstill, Psychatog, Replenish, and other archetypes with stack interaction. We could go up to a full set of each if we want to respect those matchups more.Burn — the Red Aggro variant focused on Pyrostatic Pillar and Black Vise — has become more popular, and sweepers are not very useful to hold it off. If we can resolve a Ravenous Baloth and a Blastoderm, we already have enough life to survive their clock, but until we reach that point, we need other ways to stay in the game, and Spike Feeder seems like a decent option for this.Compost provides card advantage against Mono Black, The Rock, and Psychatog by guaranteeing an extra draw whenever a black card hits the opponent's graveyard. This is a meta call based on how popular Mono Black Midrange is among newer players, but we can swap it for another card if needed.Tormod's Crypt holds off Reanimator and Replenish, while also significantly slowing down Psychatog and serving as an efficient answer to some other combos. Speaking of combos, Gaea's Blessing is a one-of that also comes in against Reanimator, but its primary role is to prevent a loss to Brain Freeze.Sideboard GuideStiflenoughtINOUTMono Black MidrangeINOUTSlighINOUTBurnINOUTAzorius LandstillINOUTGoblinsINOUTPsychatogINOUTReplenishINOUTStasisINOUTTerrageddonINOUTReanimatorINOUTWrapping UpThat's all for today! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment! Thanks for reading!
