Introduction
“Firebending is not something to fear, but if you don’t respect it, it’ll chew you up and spit you out.”
- Zuko
Each new Magic: The Gathering set brings us a lot of new cards. If you're always looking for ways to update your decks, the new sets also bring lots of new options to upgrade your strategies in ways you might not even realize you needed.
The last Universes Beyond set released in 2025, Avatar: The Last Airbender, was no different.
So far, we've covered the 10 best Lessons for Commander, and the best cards for cEDH
, as well as the best cards for Legacy
, Pioneer
, Timeless
, Modern
, and Standard
.
Now, it's time to discuss the 10 coolest burn cards in this set, including all the cards in the main set (TLA) and the Jumpstart cards (TLE).
Before we go to our top 10, let's discuss a few honorable mentions that also interact with damage.
Honorable Mentions
Reprints
Some iconic MTG cards were reprinted with art from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender show, as well as information from their respective books (seasons), and the original episode they're from.
We won't add these cards to our top 10, but let's honor them:

Fated Firepower

Fated Firepower makes you deal more damage to your opponents and their permanents according to how many fire counters it has. You can cast this spell with Flash, which is great in firebending decks. These decks can also use most of the cards we'll see below.
As Fated Firepower doesn't deal damage by itself, it didn't make our cut, but it is relevant. It earned an honorable mention.
Top 10 Coolest Burn Cards in Avatar: The Last Airbender
10. Combustion Technique

Lessons are incredible in this set!
Combustion Technique is an instant that deals damage to a target creature according to the number of Lessons in your graveyard plus 2. If that creature dies in the same turn, it is exiled.
Besides this one, many other Lessons in this set interact with how many of these spells are in your graveyard. This instant is often a removal and also makes other spells you can cast right afterward a lot more powerful.
9. Avatar Aang // Aang, Master of Elements

This card has sparked a lot of debate since it was revealed.
Let's ignore everything we know about combos and buyback interactions that can make any Commander list unbearably strong and focus on our main theme: burn. It is a bit overshadowed in this card, but it is still here.
Its back side, Aang, Master of Elements, discounts the cost of your spells and lets you, at the beginning of each upkeep, decide whether you want to transform him into Avatar Aang again.
If you do, you'll gain 4 life, draw 4 cards, put 4 +1/+1 counters on him, and deal 4 damage to each opponent. Alongside a few cards in this set itself, like Fated Firepower, he will deal even more damage.
8. Ozai's Cruelty
“You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher.”
- Ozai

Ozai's Cruelty shows up often in the show, either through Zuko's scar or through the competitive relationship between his children, which he encouraged.
This 3-mana spell deals damage to a target player and forces them to discard two cards.
It is quite versatile and appropriately named.
7. Bumi Bash

One of the most popular commanders in this set is Toph, the First Metalbender, so anything we can use to remove nonbasic lands, like Bumi Bash, is rather welcome. But, if you want to play this commander or something that interacts really well with lands, Bumi Bash can be a nightmare.
6. Iroh's Demonstration

This card has one of the best flavor texts in this set ("Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname 'The Dragon of the West'?), but it also deals 4 damage to a target creature or 1 damage to each enemy creature.
It is great against any list centered around 1/1 creature tokens!
5. Reckless Blaze

You can use this sorcery to clear the board, as it deals 5 damage to each creature. For each creature under your control that dies as a result in this turn, this card will also create red mana.
4. Team Avatar

Team Avatar is a versatile enchantment that buffs your creatures so that they deal a lot of damage, but it is also a removal.
When you cast it, whenever one of your creatures attacks by itself, it gets +X/+X until the end of the turn, where X is the number of creatures you control.
Nonetheless, if there's anything in your way, preventing you from dealing damage, you may discard this spell and use its other ability. It deals damage to a target creature according to how many creatures you control.
3. Firebending Lesson

For just one red mana, you can cast Firebending Lesson and deal 2 damage to a target creature. But, if you have too much leftover mana or if you use a lot of firebending, you can use its Kicker to deal 5 damage instantly.
2. Overwhelming Victory

What could be better than removing a creature? Well, removing a creature and also making your board better as a result.
With Overwhelming Victory, besides dealing 5 damage to a target, you'll give +X/+0 to your creatures, where X is the leftover damage you dealt in this process.
Example: if you target a 1/1 creature with this spell and deal 5 damage to it, you'll buff your creatures by +4/+0.
1. Longshot, Rebel Bowman

This legendary creature is the best burn card in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
It does come in Jumpstart boosters, but you can also get it in Collectors Boosters.
For a total of four mana, this 3/3 creature with reach discounts the cost of your noncreature spells (like instants, enchantments, artifacts, and similar) and also deals 2 damage to each opponent when you cast these spells.
In spellslinger decks or even artifact decks that don't play lots of creatures, Longshot, Rebel Bowman is a real problem. In very little time, he could drain over half of your opponents' life points.
Please note that he interacts with the spells you cast properly, so copies don't trigger his burn abilities.
Final Words
This Avatar: The Last Airbender set gained more favor with the community than its predecessor, the Marvel's Spider-Man set.
Either because of the new mechanics or the flavors that reference the 2005 animated show that conquered fans across the world, Avatar: The Last Airbender includes powerful cards that will be great in many decks.
If you'd like to play something "in theme", we can definitely build spellslinger lists with the Lessons from this set as well as the burn support released in the following set.
The burn cards above are easy to fit in different decks and interesting ways to make your matches more diverse, even if they're not the main focus of your strategies.
